A Brief Introduction of The Environmental Handbook of the Grand Buddha Monastery

The theme of the Environmental Handbook of the Grand Buddha Monastery is “Creating a Pure Land on Earth through Environmental Protection.” Ven. Yao Zhi, Abbot of the Grand Buddha Monastery, is the Director of the Editorial Board, and Chenxu Guo, a lay Buddhist, is Chief Editor. As a Buddhist, Mr. Guo has devoted himself to environmental protection and acquired a lot of knowledge of garbage sorting, recycling and disposal. Under the guidance of Ven. Yao Zhi, Mr. Guo compiled this handbook based on the ideas of “Four Kinds of Environmentalism,” which include “Protecting the Spiritual Environment, Protecting the Living Environment, Protecting the Natural Environment, and Protecting the Social Environment.”

“Protecting the Spiritual Environment” is the concept of protecting the environment from the human mind, for the pollution of the environment originates from people’s subjective perceptions. If people’s mind becomes pure, our environment will not be polluted. Therefore, we should first advocate the purification of people’s mind in order to turn greed into dedication, hatred into compassion, and stupidity into wisdom. Such purification is protecting the spiritual environment.

“Protecting the Living Environment” starts from our daily behaviors. What we need in our daily life is little, but what we actually use and waste is too much. Therefore, we should advocate the concept of Waste Nothing, take frugality ---  one of the ancient Chinese traditions --- as a virtue, and reduce the consumption of daily necessities. Such practice is protecting the living environment based on self-restraint.

“Protecting the Natural Environment” appeals to everyone to protect nature. As is known to all, in order to live a comfortable life, mankind has recklessly destroyed the environment and endlessly exploited natural resources, which have caused serious environmental pollution and countless natural disasters. Our natural environment and mankind are interdependent, and the destruction of nature is actually the destruction of mankind. Only when the natural environment is protected well can mankind have a bright future.

“Protecting the Social Environment” calls for everyone’s participation, since environmental ideas must be practiced by all in the society. People’s awareness of environmental protection should be aroused, and the whole society needs to join hands in environmental protection.

As a carrier of Buddhist environmental protection, The Environmental Handbook of the Grand Buddha Monastery follows the spiritual guideline of “Aspiration Prayer” written by Ven. Yao Zhi. With the Grand Buddha Monastery as a model, it plays the role of the “Five Functions:  Practicing, Educating, Demonstrating, Leading, and Spreading” so as to mobilize the whole society to take actions together. At the same time, through Buddhist lectures, the Grand Buddha Monastery combines Buddhist concepts of practicing goodness and cherishing blessings with The Environmental Handbook of the Grand Buddha Monastery, and promotes environmental protection on a large scale in order to achieve the noble aim of making one kind idea influence one Buddhist, one Buddhist a family, one family a community, and finally, a community a city.

In order to attract young people to acquire knowledge of environmental protection in the course of learning English, The Environmental Handbook of Grand Buddha Monastery is edited in both Chinese and English. Hopefully, in the future, more and more young people will join environmental protection, which makes it no longer a slogan or symbol but a way of participation and a sense of responsibility.
